1983 Senior Men's
National Team

Team

The 1983 FISU Games brought together some of the very best athletes and teams from around the world to compete for their country and, for many, to prepare for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The Canadian Men’s Volleyball team came of age at the 1983 FISU Games. The team breezed through the preliminary round of the competition handily defeating all of their opponents 3 straight.  They did the same in the qualifying round, 3-0 vs China, Japan and Italy, to emerge first in their pool.

With a 3-0 win against Korea, the team advanced to the final while Cuba, 4th in the World Championships in 1982, squeaked past Italy. The Canadian team rode a winning streak of 25 games into the gold medal game against Cuba – a Universiade record at the time.

In playing Cuba, the Canadians faced a team with a similar style – physically big and able to control the net. The team started quickly before an emotional crowd of 13,000 at the Edmonton Coliseum, the largest crowd to ever watch a volleyball match in Canada, winning the first game, losing the second and leading 14-7 in the third before the Cubans scored nine straight points to win the game and steal the momentum of the match.  The Canadian team lost the fourth 15-8, for a silver medal.
