ABOUT THE WORLD LEAGUE

Established in 1990, the FIVB World League is an annual men’s national team volleyball tournament that reaches all corners of the planet, offering millions in prize money, professional organization and worldwide TV coverage.

In its inaugural year in 1990, the World League featured eight teams, 10 in 1991, 12 from 1992-2000 and 2004-05, 16 from 2001-2003 and 2006-2012, then 18 in the 2013 edition, 28 in 2014, 32 in 2015 and 36 this year.

After increasing the number of participating teams these past years, the FIVB remodelled the competition in the build-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The new format will see the participating nations split into three groups of twelve teams during 5 weeks.

The Intercontinental Round in Groups 1 and 2 will be played over three weeks from June 17 through to July 3, while the preliminary round in Group 3 will be completed in two weeks. The Group 3 Finals will be held from July 1-3. They will be followed by the Group 2 Finals from July 9-10 and the Group 1 Finals from July 13-17.

The World League Group 1 Finals will feature two pools of three teams, followed by semifinals and finals. The participants will include the top five teams from the preliminary round final ranking and the hosts. In Groups 2 and 3, the Finals will be played by the top three teams in the ranking and the host country. The Finals hosts will be confirmed in due course.
