2014 Beach National Championships in Toronto this Weekend
After a successful Western National Championships this past weekend, the action now moves east as the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) and Volleyball Canada is set to host the 2014 Beach National Championships at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto.
For the first time in eight years, two host cities hosted the Beach Nationals: Parksville, B.C. on Vancouver Island on August 15th-17th in 2014; and Toronto will now host to the Eastern Youth National Championships (14U, 15U, 16U, 18U, 22U), as well as Senior and 21U National Championships on August 22nd-24th in 2014. Both cities will host the event in 2015 as well.
"The regional format, a first for beach volleyball in Canada, will create new opportunities for young athletes across the country to participate in a National Championships where they may have not otherwise had the means to travel to play," explains David Caughran, chair of Volleyball Canada’s National Championships program committee.
"The OVA is pleased and proud to have the opportunity to host Volleyball Canada’s Beach Nationals in 2014 and 2015," said OVA Executive Director, Jo-Anne Ljubicic. “Hosting this prestigious event gives the OVA the opportunity to deliver on its strategic goals, including showcasing the sport of beach volleyball for Ontarians, being recognized as a leading sport organization in Canada and building organizational capacity through training and development of athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers.”
Nearly 250 teams are expected to take over Ashbridges Bay for the tournament, in hopes of being crowned National Champions in their respective divisions. Ashbridges was recently the home to the Ontario Championships on August 9 & 10 and was also host to multiple stops on the OVA Beach Tour throughout the summer.
