Pan Am Cup: Argentina edges Canada in five sets and goes on top of Pool C
TIJUANA, Mexico, (August 13 2014) - In a long five-set battle, Argentina edged Canada 25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 23-25,19-17 on Wednesday night at the IX Men’s Pan American Cup volleyball tournament.
Argentina finishes atop of Pool C and gets a bye to the semifinals. Canada finishes at 0-2 and heads to the consolation playoffs.
Dallas Soonias of Red Deer, Alta., led Canada with 27 points, Toon Van Lankvelt, River, Man., with 16, Graham Vigrass of Calgary with 13 and Jason DeRocco of Winnipeg with 10.
Van Lankvelt said Canada couldn’t build on a good start: “We started playing some good volleyball. We played really well as the game went on, but still after 20 points we were making some mental mistakes and our execution after 20 has to be a lot better.’’
Canada’s head coach Georges Laplante was pleased with his team's efforts.
“We played well. We missed a little bit opportunity but we fought hard. We fought hard tried to apply every point. It just didn’t fall on our side. And we must play point by point with more intensity”
