Two top-ten finishes for Canada at the Gstaad Grand Slam

July 12, 2014:  A women’s team finished fifth, and a Canadian men’s team finished ranked ninth at the Gstaad Beach Volleyball Grand Slam in Switzerland this weekend.

The women’s team of Sarah Pavan (Kitchener, ON) and Heather Bansley (Waterdown, ON)had a good run in Gstaad, finally falling to the third-ranked Czech team of Kolocova and Slukova 1-2 (21-19,19-21,9-15) in round 3.   Pavan and Bansley also had a fifth ranking at the Prague Open earlier this year.

ChaimSchalk of Red Deer, AB, and Ben Saxton of Calgary advanced to the second round and they were defeated by a Dutch pair (Stiekema-Varenhorst )0-2 (16-21, 19-21) on Saturday.

"Gstaad has been good to us once again. We played some great volleyball beating some high level teams,” said Schalk. This is the pair’s third ninth ranking this year – they placed in the same position at FIVB events in Norway and Shanghai.  “We are, however, not satisfied and looking to break through to the quarters and semis of some upcoming events, that's the goal." 

The double-gender US$800,000 FIVB Gstaad Grand Slam until Sunday July 13 when the men’s and women’s medal matches take place. It is the ninth event and the fifth Grand Slam on the 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour calendar that features nine Grand Slams and 11 Open tournaments.

Maverick Hatch and Christian Redmann finished 17th.

The 2014 World Tour began at the Fuzhou Open in China in April and concludes at the Durban Open in South Africa in December. Next up on the World Tour calendar is the Transavia Hague Grand Slam which runs from July 15-20.
