Saxton and Schalk equal best result this season on World Tour

STAVANGER, Norway – Ben Saxton of Calgary and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., equalled their best result this season on the FIVB World Tour circuit in beach volleyball finishing ninth in men’s competition.

Saxton and Schalk went 3-0 in the round robin which included upset wins over two top-10 ranked teams to place first in pool H.   The second-year pair earned a first round bye in the opening knockout round and then fell to seventh-seeds Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matsyk of Germany 21-16, 21-14 in the round of 16.

Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal won their first gold of the World Tour when they defeated Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho in the Stavanger Grand Slam gold medal match on Sunday. In a match that pitted 2004 Olympic champion Ricardo against 2008 Olympic champion Dalhausser, the USA pair ended victorious against the Brazilians with a 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) win.

In women’s competition, April Ross and Kerri Walsh of the U.S., claimed their third gold medal this season as they defeated Liliana Fernandez and Elsa Baquerizo in the championship match. The Americans pair beat the Spaniards 2-0 (21-12, 21-15) to add Stavanger gold to their wins at the Fuzhou Open and Moscow Grand Slam from earlier in the year.

Both Canadian entries went 1-2 in the round robin then lost their first elimination match.  Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto lost to a Chinese pair in 56 minutes while Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., and Heather Bansley of Toronto were bounced by an Italian combo.

The tour resumes July 8-13 in Gstaad, Switzerland.
