June 9, 2014

HUIXQUILUCAN, Mexico – Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter of Toronto as well as Kacie MacTavish and Caleigh Whitaker of Sharon, Ont., each won silver medals this past weekend at the fifth stop on the NORCECA beach volleyball circuit.

In the men’s final, Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez of Cuba defeated Binstock and Schachter 22-20, 21-15.  Earlier in the day the Canadians had upset Todd Rogers and Theo Brunner of the U.S. in the semifinals 21-16, 21-18.  Rogers was part of the 2008 Olympic champion pair.

“I’m a little bit disappointed,’’ said Binstock, who was third with his partner last week in Manzanillo, Mexico.  ‘’We had them a little scared, but we got very tired at the end. They are so strong and you have to be strong the whole time.’’

Simon Fecteau-Boutin of Lévis, Que., and James Battiston of Malton, Ont., were eliminated in the quarterfinals falling 21-12, 21-18 to Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros of Mexico.

In the women’s final, Bibiana Candelas and Martha Revuelta of Mexico beat MacTavish and Whitaker 21-19, 21-14.  The Canadians returned to the circuit after posting two ninth place finishes on the FIVB World Tour this spring.

“Kacie and I really enjoyed ourselves,’’ said Whitaker. ‘’We gave our best effort. The Mexicans played awesome and deserved to win that match.

Tealle Hunkus and Kimberly MacGiven of the U.S. defeated Claudia Séguin of Saint-Pascal Baylon, Ont. and Brandie Wilkerson of Toronto, 21-15, 18-21, 15-12 in the third place match.
