Canadian women off to a silver start at Cayman Islands beach tourney
Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Taylor Pischke fought hard, but couldn’t hold off Tealle Hunkus and Kimberly DiCello of United States-A, who claimed the first women's gold medal at stake on the 2014 NORCECA Beach Volleyball circuit at Seven Miles Beach, Grand Cayman.
In the final match-up of unbeaten teams, Hunkus and DiCello won 21-23, 21-10, 15-9 in 53 minutes in an entertaining contest that was well received by the crowd.
"I think this tournament was a great start to the season," said Humana-Paredes, 21, who is from Toronto. "We had some tough matches that pushed us, but I'm excited to get back to Canada and start training together. It was a great NORCECA event and we are hoping to go back next year!" Her teammate, Pischke, is from Winnipeg, MB.
Earlier on, Humana-Paredes and Pischke rallied past USA-B's Heather Hughes and Christal Engle 17-21, 26-24, 15-13 in 58 minutes.
Hughes and Engle got some redemption as they got the bronze medal with a 21-19, 21-9 defeat of Virgen and Cruz of Mexico.
On the men’s side, Andrew Hinchey and Ryan Vanderburg (Canada-B) lost the bronze medal match (21-14, 21-12) to Puerto Ricans, Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock. The U.S. won both the gold and silver medals.
Canadian teams Claudia Seguin and Brandie Wilkerson, and Cameron Wheelan and Michael Plantinga did not advance to the semis.
