Number-one seed Canadians win opening match at world junior beach volleyball championshipsHALIFAX (August 29, 2012) – Number-one seeds Taylor Pischke of Winnipeg and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto won their opening match on Wednesday to open the 26-country FIVB World Junior Championships in beach volleyball.
The world juniors are being held through Sunday at the purpose-built beach volleyball complex on the Salter Lot of the Halifax Waterfront for the second straight year after a wildly successful tournament in 2011.
Pishke and Humana-Paredes defeated Nadia Lucia Galan Dary and Ana Lucia Villgran Ruano of Guatemala 21-7, 21-4. Last year, Humana-Paredes won the silver medal with Victoria Altomare. Pishke and Humana-Paredes won the senior national title earlier this month in Vancouver.
Charlotte Sider and Julia Hamer, both of Toronto ; Julie Longman and Sophie Bukovec, also both of Toronto as well as Hillary Monette of New Minas, N.S., and Meaghan MacDougall of Hammond Plains, N.S., (in photo) all lost their first two preliminary round matches.
Men’s action gets underway Thursday. Canadian entries are number-one seeds Ben Chow of Surrey, B.C., and Nick Del Bianco of Coquitlam, B.C.; sixth seeds Dallas Keith of Toronto and Garrett May of London, Ont.,; Andrew Kocur of Toronto and Lucas Colman of Brooklin, Ont., and Aaron Nusbaum of Aurora, Ont., and Grant O’Gorman of Toronto.
