World bronze for Pischke/Humana-Paredes

MYSLOWICE- Taylor Pischke of Winnipeg and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto won the bronze medal Sunday at the FIVB U23 World Championships in beach volleyball.

Pischke and Humana-Paredes defeated Eliska Galova and Adela Machova of the Czech Republic in the third place match 19-21, 21-15, 16-14.

In the tie-break set, Pischke and Humana-Paredes appeared to be on their way to winning comfortably, but the Czechs called a time-out when they were down 11-7 and mounted a comeback.

Humana-Paredes and Pischke rediscovered their rhythm though and after letting one match point slip, won the bronze medals on their second when Pischke hit a winning spike.

It was a remarkable achievement considering that this is their first tournament of the year together as the pair are at university in different parts of Canada and can only train once the academic year is over.

“It was a really, really good game and they played really, really well and we played really, really well and it came down to withstanding the pressure and the heat,” Humana-Paredes said. “The first didn’t go our way, but we came back strong.”

It is the second international success for the Canadian pair who was fifth last year at the world junior championships.  Humana-Paredes won silver at the 2011 junior worlds with Victoria Altomare.

In the gold medal match, Victoria Bieneck and Isabell Schneider of Germany defeated Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Thais Rodrigues Ferreira of Brazil 19-21, 21-12, 15-13.  The Brazilians had edged the Canadians in the semifinal earlier Sunday 21-18, 15-21, 23-21.
