Women's Olympic Volleyball Qualifier Postpone

WINNIPEG - Volleyball Canada was informed yesterday that the NORCECA Women's Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament that was scheduled for January 8-16, 2012 in Tijuana, Mexico has been postponed. The NORCECA (NOrth America, CEntral America & CAribbean) Volleyball Confederation cited financial difficulties in the host being able to organize the event in January. Negotiations are continuing with the host organizer, sponsors and a TV broadcaster to re-schedule the event for later in April, 2012.

The event, which will feature the highest ranked teams in the NORCECA Zone including Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico and two others, will qualify the winner to the London Olympics. The USA, who recently qualified for the Olympics by finishing in second position at the World Cup that recently finished in Japan, will not compete in the Continental Qualifier.

"I'm very disappointed with this change in the date as it now poses significant challenges for us," stated Canadian Head Coach Arnd Ludwig. "The commitment of our athletes and staff and all of our preparations this year have been focused around the qualifier in January. In the end we have to live with this decision and we will now do our best to adjust our program plans and preparations for April."

It is expected that some athletes will immediately look for contract opportunities overseas and return to the program in mid-April, but many will remain in Winnipeg throughout the winter to continue training and preparing for this ultimate goal of Olympic qualification.
