Western upsets number one Trinity WesternQUEBEC CITY (March 1, 2013) – New monarchs will be crowned at the end of the CIS men’s volleyball championship this Sunday. Trailing two sets to none, the seventh-seeded Western Mustangs mounted a comeback for the ages to defeat the two-time defending champion Trinity Western Spartans in a thrilling five-set quarter-final Friday afternoon at PEPS Stadium.
Every set was pretty much insane too watch. The finals score was 26-28, 23-25, 31-29, 27-25, 15-9
Combine to McMaster’s win earlier today, the result means an OUA team will reach the CIS final for the first time since Toronto accomplished the feat in 1991. The only Ontario-based team to win the Tantramar Trophy was Ottawa in 1968, although the Gee-Gees were not competing in the OUA conference at the time.
“It was a little stressful! Each set was a battle and it was fun. We talked about this, our motto for today was ‘all day’. Even down 0-2, we were going to continue. That’s when the momentum started to switch and my guys started to believe in themselves a little more, and they got it,” said the Mustangs’ coach Jim Sage.
The standing room only crowd of over 3,000 was a big help for the fifth-seeded and tournament host Laval Rouge et Or, who defeated the No. 4 Alberta Golden Bears in four sets of 15-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 27-25 to reach the semifinals for the fifth year in a row at the CIS men’s volleyball championship.
“I feel relieved! We should not forget that those kids are not often exposed to this kind of idolatry. I wasn’t nervous, and neither was Gino (Brousseau, assistant coach), because we had lived this in the past. But to play volleyball with a knife on the throat, it’s not pleasant,” said Laval head coach Pascal Clément.
In the other men’s quarterfinals, the top-seed Brandon Bobcats defeated l’Université de Montréal 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-20 and McMaster swept New Brunswick 25-23, 25-17, 25-14.
The semifinal match-ups for Saturday are Western-McMaster and Laval-Brandon beginning at 6 p.m.
