Volleyball Canada Under 19 Beach Teams Announced

Feb. 26, 2014

The Under 19 Beach Volleyball selection tournament was held at the high performance centre in Toronto earlier this week, this time determining the two teams – one of each gender – that will represent Canada at the FIVB U19 World Championships in Porto, Portugal,  July 29 to August 3, 2014.

It was a clean sweep for the McNamara twins of Delta, BC.  -  Megan and Nicole won all their matches including the final over Alexandra Poletto (Toronto, ON) and Tia Miric (Toronto, ON) 21-19, 21-15.

"We prepared a lot in the weeks coming up to the tournament and it feels amazing that all of our hard work paid off,” said Megan. "We are super excited to represent Canada at our first World Championships this summer!"

The McNamara sisters didn’t miss a beat throughout the tournament, winning over Victoria Haworth (Waverley, N.S) / Klara Doelle (Halifax, N.S) in two sets in the quarter finals, and then beating sisters Courtney and Brittney Sestric of London, ON in the semis.  The Sestrics took bronze over Monika Bischof (Whitby, ON) and Gabriela Maciagowski (Etobicoke, ON) 21-12, 22-20 in their final match.

For the U19 men,  Zachery Albert (Beamsville, ON) and Craig Ireland (Brampton, ON) upset Jake MacNeil (Georgetown, ON) and  Chris Towe (Caledon, ON)  21-19, 13-21, 15-12.   Albert and Ireland will represent Canada in Portugal.

“Zach and I are good friends with both Jake and Chris, who we played in the final, and have always admired their skill. Because of this, we just played loose, and managed to win,” said Ireland.

Albert said: “I was shocked and couldn’t believe we even made it to the finals and now we get the honour to represent Canada at Worlds.”

Adam Spragg (Innisfil, ON) and Robert Thompson (Maple, ON) picked up the bronze medal after beating Dylan Hunt (Sharon, ON) and  Kevin Szymanski (North York, ON) 22-20, 19-21, 15-13.

The selection tournament for Volleyball Canada’s FISU (International University Sports Federation) beach teams will be held in Toronto March 29 and 30. The deadline for registration is March 26.
