Two Silver Medals for Canadians on Beach Circuit

MAZATLAN, Mexico (September 16, 2013) - Canada finished off the weekend with silver medals in both the men’s and women’s divisions after competition wrapped up at the sixth leg of the 2013 NORCECA Circuit for beach volleyball on Sunday.

Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, ON) and Taylor Pischke (Winnipeg, MB) made it to the gold-medal match, losing to Mexicans Martha Revuelta and Bibi Candelas, 2-0 (23-21, 21-18). It was the 10th career victory for Candelas, breaking a tie with the now retired Yarleen Santiago of Puerto Rico at the top of the all-time list.

Humana-Paredes and Pischke won the last tournament in this circuit in Cuba late last month. Another Canadian team (Kacie Mactavish and Caleigh Whitaker) finished eighth overall in the women’s standings (full results below).

Mexico also finished on top on the men’s side – Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros of Mexico-A scored a 2-1 (21-18, 15-21, 15-13) victory over Grant O’Gorman (Scarborough, ON) and Sam Pedlow (Barrie, ON) of Canada-A in intense hot and humid conditions. It was the 20th gold medal and 26th overall for Virgen, the highest totals in both categories in the history of the NORCECA Circuit.

Canada’s Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter finished fifth overall in the men’s division.

The Canadian teams, with the exception of Humana-Paredes and Pischke, now move onto to the next stop on the tour in Puerto Rico, Sept. 18 to 23
