Two Canadian pairs win opening matches

MYSLOWICE, Poland (June 6, 2013)- Taylor Pischke of Winnipeg and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto (in photo) as well as William Hoey of Brampton, Ont., and William Sidgwick of Toronto won their opening main draw matches Thursday at the FIVB U23 World Championships in beach volleyball.

In women’s play, Pischke and Humana-Paredes, seeded 14th, defeated Cristina Monterrey and Catalina Zuniga of Costa Rica 21-7, 21-8.  They will face third-seeds Tara Roenicke and Kirby Burnham of the U.S.,  for top-spot in pool C on Friday.

Denise Wooding of North Vancouver and Charlotte Sider of Ottawa lost their two matches on Thursday and are in a must win situation Friday in order to advance out of pool E

In men’s competition, Hoey and Sidgwick, seeded 13th, earned a hard-fought victory over Anton Dedkov and Anton Sinhayeuski of Belarus 17-21, 21-19, 15-13.  The Canadians play their final two round robin matches on Friday.

Greg Simone of London, Ont., and Gabriel Burlacu of Tecumseh, Ont., lost their opener and also play twice Friday.
