TSN2 to carry Canada Games finals Thursday

SHERBROOKE, Que. (August 8, 2013) Both of Alberta’s teams will be heading to Thursday's finals in indoor volleyball. The men’s team with a decisive, but very close, 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-21) win over British Columbia. BC’s Branden Schmidt led the match with 12 kills, while Kevin Proudfoot led Alberta with 11 kills.

The women face-off against Manitoba, who went in to the match without previously losing a set at the Games. The changed quickly though as Alberta handed them not only their first set loss, but also their first match, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22. Manitoba’s Alicia Ogoms led the match with 12 kills and three aces, while Carolyn O’Dwyer led Alberta with 12 kills, an ace, and one block.

In the other semi-finals, British Columbia and Ontario faced off in a re-match of their last pool play match. This match resulted in much of the same, with BC punching their ticket to the final with a 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21 win. Katelyn led the match with 20 kills, while Danielle Brisebois of Ontario had 14 kills and two aces.

In the feature match of the night, an old rivalry was renewed as Ontario and Quebec faced-off in front of yet another sold out crowd. The match was a back and forth affair, with both teams looking poised to pull away from the other, but neither team was ever able to grab hold of the match. In the 5th and final set, the lead flip-flopped a few times, when Quebec grabbed it at 10-9, and never looked back, closing out the match with a 5 point run, 15-10.
