Trinity Western University Spartans to represent Canada at FIVB Club World Championships
OTTAWA –The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) champion Trinity Western University Spartans from Langley, B.C., will represent Canada at the FIVB Club World Championships set for October 8-14 in Doha, Qatar.
The Spartans were picked by NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean) to represent the region at the annual tournament. The Spartans are one of eight clubs at the event which includes two-time defending champions Trentino from Italy.
Lucas Van Berkel (Edmonton, Alta.), Brad Kufske (Abbotsford, B.C.), Derek Thiessen (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Branden Schmidt (Winton, Alta.)., all of the Spartans are currently on Canada’s national junior team which won the silver medal at the Junior Pan Am Cup last week and will compete at the world junior championships later this summer in Brazil.
Meanwhile fellow Spartans Rudy Verhoeff (Calgary, Alta.) and Marc Howatson (Victoria, B.C.) were selected to Canada’s team for the World University Championships this August in China. Head coach Ben Josephson is an assistant coach on the Games team as well.
