Tough week for Canadians on Swiss World Tour stop
GSTAAD, Switzerland – Christian Redmann and Richard Van Huizen of Toronto lost their third and final round robin match on Friday at the eighth stop on the beach volleyball World Tour circuit and won’t advance to the playoff round.
Redmann and Van Huizen drew a very tough pool which included two powerhouse Brazilian pairs. On Friday, the Canadians lost to 11th seeds Marcio Henrique Barroso Araujo and Alex Ricardo Costa Santos of Brazil 21-14, 21-15
With the victory the Brazilians win the pool with a perfect 3-0 record their compatriots and sixth seeds Pedro Henrique Cunha and Thiago Santos Barbosa followed at 2-1, Latvians Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins were third at 1-2. The Canadians went 0-3.
On the women’s side, Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke were eliminated in qualifying. They won their opening match over Spain but lost to Britain in a bid to grab one of the eight available spots for the main draw.
The next stop is in two weeks in Marseilles, France.
