Tough start for Canadians at China Open

FUZHOU, China – Canada’s two entries in the women’s main draw at the China Open beach volleyball tournament lost their matches to open round robin play.

Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto fell to Liliana Fernandez Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan of Spain 21-15, 21-8 and Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova of the Czech Republic 21-17, 21-18.

It was a similar story for Kristina Valjas of Toronto and Jamie Broder of Victoria. They lost their opening match to Maria Antonelli and Agatha Bednarczuk of Brazil 21-14, 21-12 and fell to Sophie Van Gestel and Madelein Meppelink of the Netherlands 21-17, 21-19.

The third round robin match for both Canadian pairs is Friday.
