Tough day for Canada at beach volleyball tour
SHANGHAI (May 2, 2013) – Canada’s two pairs in men’s play saw their FIVB Grand Slam beach volleyball tournament end on Thursday while Kristina Valjas and Jaime Broder are on the ropes on the women’s side.
In men’s competition, Christian Redmann and Josh Binstock of Toronto as well as Maverick Hatch of Comox, B.C., and Sam Schachter of Toronto each ended the round robin portion at 0-3 and did not advance to the playoff round.
Redmann and Binstock were down to extra points in the third and deciding set for a berth in the playoff against Swiss pair Sebastian Chevalier and Mats Kovatsch but the Canadians eventually fell 21-15, 19-21, 17-15.
In the women’s main draw, Valjas and Broder lost their opening two round matches and must win Friday to have a chance to advance. The Canadians were ninth last week at a World Tour stop.
