Toronto’s Sophie Bukovec in contention for two worlds

 TORONTO (February 17, 2013) Sophie Bukovec of Toronto and Tiadora Miric of Thornhill, Ont., as well as Blake Scheerhoorn of Belleville, Ont., and Lucas Coleman of Brooklin, Ont., earned spots for the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean)  U19 beach volleyball championships at trials on Sunday.

The competition was held at Volleyball Canada’s Beach High Performance Facility in Toronto.

Earlier this month Bukovec qualified for the U21 NORCECA Championships with Ali Wooley of Toronto.  Both NORCECA events are qualifiers for the world championships in those age groups

Bukovec and Miric defeated Nicole McNamara and Megan McNamara of Delta, B.C., in a close final 22-20, 22-24, 15-13.

Katie Langan and Brooklyn Gallant, both of Cambridge, Ont., earned the bronze.

On the men’s side, Scheerhoorn and Coleman swept Jake MacNeil of Georgetown, Ont., and Andrew Richards of London, Ont., 21-17, 21-18.

In the bronze medal match, Joraver Sangha of Mississauga, Ont., and  Liam Kopp of St. Catharines, Ont., beat Kris McCrea of Port Moody, B.C., and Devon Dunn of Surrey, B.C., 21-17, 20-22, 19-17.

The exact date and location for the NORCECA Championships are still to be announced.
