Three top-10 finishes for Canada at international beach volleyball tournament

CHENNAI, India – Canadian champions Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., finished seventh in men’s play at the Chennai Challenge beach volleyball tournament.

Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto took ninth spot as did Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Katherine Zakrzewski of Toronto in women’s competition.

Reader and Chalk finished the tournament with three wins and two losses suffering their second defeat on Friday to Parviz Farrokhi and Salagh Aghamohammad of Iran 21-16, 21-19. The highlight for the pair was eliminating second seeds Thomas Kaczmarek and Nils Rohde of Germany in Thursday’s quarterfinal repechage.

In women’s competition, both Canadian teams fell in the same repechage round. Bansley and Maloney, the Canadian champions lost to top-seeds Liesbeth Mouha and Goedele Van Cauteren of Belgium 21-15, 16-21, 15-9. Rodrigue and Zakrzewski dropped a 22-20, 21-18 decision to Heather Hughes and Michelle Moriarty of the U.S.

The medal matches are on Saturday.
