Three of four Canadian teams in playoffs

LARNAKA, Cyprus (July 12, 2012) – Lucas Coleman of Brooklin, Ont., and Andrew Kocur of Toronto; Julie Longman and Sophie Bukovec, both of Toronto (in photo) as well as Alexandra Wooley of Toronto and Tiadora Miric of Thornhill, Ont., are all headed to the playoff round at the beach volleyball world youth championships.

In women’s play, Wooley and Miric placed first in their group with a 2-0 record and they will get a direct bye to the round of 16 with the seven other first place group finishers.

Longman and Bukovec lost their opening two matches but won their third over a Guatemalan pair to slip into third in their group and a spot in the first playoff round.  The second and third place teams in each group battle it out in a one-match playoff for the other eight available spots in the round of 16.

On the men’s side, Coleman and Kocur opened with two wins before falling to a Brazilian pair to finish second in their group.

William Hoey and Liam Kopp of Ontario lost their three round robin matches and did not advance.
