Team Canada intra-squad December 21 in Gatineau, Que.

 GATINEAU – Jonathan Sloane of Winchester, Ont., and Jean-Philippe Desjardins of Gatineau Que., will compete in the third and final intra-squad match of the fall season for Team Canada men’s volleyball squad on Friday December 21 at the Centre Sportif in Gatineau.

The public is invited to attend the event and admission is free. The doors open at 4 p.m. and the match starts at 5 p.m.

The first two intra-squad matches, which features players at the Full Time Training Centre in Gatineau, were held on November 2 and November 30.  They proved to be very successful attracting hundreds of fans who watched exciting matches then had an opportunity to meet the players.

Sloane enjoyed a great career with the Algonquin College Thunder and the University of Brandon Bobcats.  At Brandon, he was named the school’s male athlete of the year last season and this year FTC head coach Vincent Pichette says he is one the fastest improving players.

Desjardins currently plays for the Cégep de l'Outaouais and has been invited to play in Friday’s intra-squad match.  He currently leads the Canadian Colleges Athletics Association (CCAA) in blocks with 40 in 34 sets play for a 1.18 average for set.

The match will feature national team members Adam Kaminski of Chatham, Ont., Louis-Pierre Mainville of Notre-Dame-de-l’Isle, Que.,and Stephen Gotch of Okotoks, Alta., Also playing are the Hoag brothers, Nicholas and Chris, who are the sons of national team coach Glenn Hoag of Gatineau.

The purpose of FTC is to enhance the long-term objective of identifying, selecting and developing a group of athletes with the ability or potential for qualifying for the 2014 FIVB Championship, the 2016 and the 2020 Olympics, as well as performing well in the 2013-2016 quadrennial.

The full-time training centre focuses on graduated CIS/CCAA athletes to prepare them for international level of training and eventually competition.

The players at the FTC will be on their Holiday break from December 22, 2012 to January 19, 2013.
