Team Canada Beach Volleyball Weekend Wrap-UpWhile most of the country was busy with Thanksgiving celebrations, several of Canada’s beach teams were representing the nation on the sand in South America and the Caribbean.
The Canadian team of Jamie Broder of Victoria, BC, and Kristina Valjas of Toronto were first their pool at the FIVB Sao Paulo Grand Slam in Brazil, winning matches against higher ranked teams from Germany, Austria and Switzerland They eventually lost to a Brazilian team (ranked second in this tournament) in round two play on Friday. Finishing ninth overall in Brazil, Broder and Valjas are now ranked 18th by the FIVB, as of Oct. 14, and will next compete at the Xiamen Grand Slam in China, which begins on Oct. 22.
On the men’s side in Sao Paulo, Grant O'Gorman (Scarborough, ON) and Sam Pedlow (Barrie, ON) and Comox, British Columbia's Maverick Hatch and Christian Redmann of Oro Station, ON, made it to the main draw, but did not advance out of their pools.

At the NORCECA event in St. Lucia this past weekend, Andrew Hinchey of Peterborough, ON, and Ryan Vandenburg of Toronto, finished second, losing to USA-B team of David McKensie and Austin Rester 2-1 (21-23, 25-23, 15-8), in the gold medal match. Canada earlier beat Mexico MEX 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) in the semi-finals. Hinchey and Vandenburg had beaten the Americans in their opening match on Friday, 2-0.
The women settled for third in St. Lucia: Canada A team of Claudia Seguin of Ottawa and Brandie Wilkerson of Churchill, Ont., lost straight sets (21-12, 21-17) to Mexico in the semi-finals.
Seguin and Wilkerson were awarded the consolation bronze medal as they defeated Peguero and Agramonte of the Dominican Republic 2-0 (21-16, 23-21) in the third-place play off.
