Team announced for World University Games

OTTAWA – Volleyball Canada announced today its 18-member men’s national B team following a selection camp which took place at the national training centre in Gatineau, Que., from May 9-13.  Twelve of the team members will play for Canada at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia from July 4-19.

A total of 49 players battled for positions under head coach Larry McKay and his assistants Steve Leknois and Tilen Kozamernik.

Returnees to the team are Rudy Verhoeff, Graham Vigrass and Jay Blankenau of Calgary, Marc Howatson of Victoria, Lucas VanBerkel of Edmonton, Braden McLean of Birch Hills, Sask., Chris Hoag of Sherbrooke, Que., Chris Voth and Dane Pischke of Winnipeg, Devon Parkinson of Victoria, Steven Marshall of Abbotsford, B.C., and Daniel Jansen VanDoorn of Langley, B.C.

 Blankenau, Howatson, Verhoeff, Vigrass and Voth were also on the 2011 team that placed fourth at the World University Games.

Newcomers to the B team are Colton deMan of Calgary, Derek Nieroda of Headingley, Man., Jérémie Lortie of Ottawa, T.J. Sanders of London, Ont., Nicolas Hoag of Sherbrooke and Justin Boudreault of St-Joseph-de-Beauce, Que.

Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C., has five players on the squad: Howatson, Verhoeff,  VanBerkel, Marshall and Jansen VanDoorn. The University of Manitoba three with Pischke, Voth and Nieroda and the University of Calgary also with three with Blankenau, Chris Hoag and Vigrass.

Lortie and Boudreault played for the CIS champions Laval Rouge et Or with Lortie named the CIS Championships MVP.

The team will immediately start preparing for the Games at the national training centre in Gatineau.
