Strong start for Canadians at NORCECA beach volleyball season opener

CAYMAN ISLANDS - Canadians Martin Reader of Comox, B.C.,  and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta.,  were among the winners of two matches in the men’s first day of pool-play action at the Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament, the first stage of the 2011 NORCECA Circuit.

Playing in Pool B, Reader, who won last year’s edition with a different partner, defeated the USA-1 team of William Strickland and Lucas Wisniakowski 21-15, 22-20 and prevailed 21-10, 23-21 against Jeovanny Medrano and David Vargas of El Salvador.

The Canadian pair play later today against Nicaragua for first in pool B.

Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen of Toronto also won their first two matches and took top spot in pool D.

On the women’s side, Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney of Toronto (pictured) were 2-0 and top pool C while Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Kacie Mactavish of Kelowna, B.C., are 1-1 for second in pool B.

Competition ends Sunday.
