Strong start for Canadian men at NORCECA beach volleyball tournament

SANTO DOMINGO - It was another big day for Canada in men’s competition on Friday at the third stop on the NORCECA beach volleyball circuit as both pairs scored victories in pool play.

Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., the heroes in Canada’s victory against Cuba in the Continental Cup final on Wednesday, won 21-16, 21-17 over Roberto Rodriguez and Christopher Underwood of Puerto Rico. They added a 21-18, 21-11 victory over brothers Arnaldo and Alfredo Castro of Nicaragua.

Ryan Vanderburg of Toronto and Andrew Hinchey of London, Ont., defeated Giandro Tokaay and Quinten Anthony of Curacao 21-14, 21-18 and scored a 21-8, 21-14 win over Sherving Ranking and Olney Thompson of Cayman Islands.

In women’s competition, Jamie Broder of Victoria and Eve Dansereau of Montreal are 1-1 in pool play.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
