St. Mary’s University and Université de Montréal win women’s volleyball conference titles

HALIFAX – The Université de Montréal Carabins and the St. Mary’s University Huskies posted straight game victories on Sunday to claim their respective conference titles.

In Quebec City, the Carabins remained undefeated this season eliminating the Rouge et Or 2-0 in the best-of-three final with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 victory for their third consecutive Quebec conference crown.  The Carabins went 20-0 in regular season play in addition to their two playoff wins this weekend. 

Both Montreal and Laval are headed to the CIS national championships March 4-6 hosted by the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Laetitia Tchoualak, the two-time national MVP, led Montreal with 17 points while Mélanie Savoie earned 15 points for Laval. 

The St. Mary’s Huskies earned their fifth Atlantic Conference women’s volleyball title on Sunday defeating the St-Francis XavierX-Women 25-12, 25-19, 25-14.  A closer match was expected in the championship match after both teams finished with league leading 11-7 records in the regular season.

Kerri Smith was named this weekend’s Final Four tournament MVP and led the Huskies Sunday with 12 kills, 22 digs and three blocks.  Game MVP Katelyn Cross added 31 assists while Ali Beaver and Amy Crider also delivered strong performances.

"We had a specific game plan that we stuck to today and our players remained focused all weekend on our goal of winning the AUS championship," said first year Huskies head coach Darren Russell, "We were able to learn from the loss to StFX last weekend and today we managed to keep their key players from hurting us."

Conference MVP Catherine Thornton led St. FX offensively with 10 kills and 7 digs.
