Sitting volleyball camps set for Canadian Forces Bases in Valcartier, Que., and Edmonton

OTTAWA – Canadian Forces Bases in Valcartier, Que., and Edmonton will host training camps for Canada’s national sitting teams this weekend (December 10-12).

‘’Volleyball Canada is developing a link with the Canadian Forces Soldier On program,’’ said Phil Allen, coordinator, Disabled Development for Volleyball Canada.’’

‘’These are the first such sessions taking place at Canadian Forces Bases, and it is the hope of Volleyball Canada that we will build a relationship with the Canadian Forces to be able to run training sessions like these on a regular basis,’’ said Allen.

Team Canada already has one national team member who is a part of the Soldier On program - Karen McCoy of Lincoln, N.B., who will be at the Edmonton camp.

In Edmonton

The women’s national team will hold its camp at CFB Edmonton to train with Canadian Forces ill and injured personnel who are part of the Canadian Forces Soldier On program   Media are particularly encouraged to visit CFB Edmonton for the Saturday afternoon training session from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The Edmonton base will have a representative on-site to help direct the media.

In Valcartier, Que.

The men’s national team will hold a similar camp at CFB Valcartier.

This is the start of a lengthy training schedule for both teams, as they begin to prepare for a competition tour to
Great Britain in March, a series of matches against the U.S.,  and Costa Rica in May, en route to their respective 2011 Pan Am Zonal Championships.

For the military, they have an opportunity to field a team for the Warrior Games in 2011 in the
U.S. and they are hopeful they'll be able to identify athletes through the sitting volleyball training sessions.
