Silver on the sand for MacTavish and WhitakerIt was another double medal weekend for Canada on the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit.
Kacie MacTavish and Caleigh Whitaker, both of Sharon, ON, come away with a second-place finish after this weekend’s seventh leg of the 2013 NORCECA Circuit – the Porta del Sol Beach Volleyball Tournament at Boqueron, Puerto Rico.
Sara Hughes and Lane Carico of United States-A won the women’s gold medal (21-10, 21-18) over the Canadian duo on Sunday. MacTavish and Whitaker were gold medalists back in April of this year in Guatemala, and were pleased to reach the podium for the second time on this circuit this season.
“We are excited with a second-place finish here in Puerto Rico. It truly is a sign we have been working in the right direction under the guidance of our coaches John May and Steve Anderson,” said Whitaker. “We look forward to continued success for the remainder of 2013 and working hard throughout the 2014 off season.”
Both Whitaker and MacTavish thanked the event organizers: “We look forward to returning next year!”
In the semifinal round, Hughes and Carico came from behind to claim a thrilling three-set (14-21, 21-13, 16-14) victory over Martha Revuelta and Bibi Candelas of Mexico-A. MacTavish-Whitaker also needed three sets to win 21-10, 17-21, 15-7 against Stevi Robinson and Kirby Burnham of United States-B.
On the men’s side, it was an all-Canadian bronze medal match, Grant O’ Gorman (Scarborough, ON) and Samuel Pedlow (Barrie, ON) edged Josh Binstock (Richmond Hill, ON) and Sam Schachter (Richmond Hill, ON) in three sets (21-17, 21-23, 15-13) for the podium position.
It was the third medal in a row for the team of O’Gorman-Pedlow, who won a silver medal in Mazatlan, Mexico, last week. Also last week in Mexico, Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, ON) and Taylor Pischke (Winnipeg, MB) took silver in the women’s event.
