Schalk, Saxton upset second seeds at WC
CAMPINAS, Brazil (May 30, 2013) – Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., and Ben Saxton of Calgary (in photo) upset second seeds Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson of the U.S., in round robin action Thursday at the FIVB World Cup beach volleyball tournament.
Schalk and Saxton, seeded seventh, took the match, 21-15, 22-20 to even their record at 1-1 with two round robin matches remaining on Friday.
In the pool B standings, the Canadian pair is tied with the Americans and Norwegians while the Germans have won both their matches so far. The top-two in each of the two pools advances to the semifinals on Saturday. Canada lost a close match to Germany on Wednesday.
"It's about time we won a close one," said Saxton. "We've come really close a bunch of times lately, so it's nice to actually get a win against a good team."
"It's about making those plays at the end of the match," added Schalk. "In this match we made huge plays when we needed, we were down in the second [set], Ben made a few blocks I made a few digs and we crawled back into it. Yesterday we had a couple of opportunities to take it from Germany and we let them off the hook, in this one we took it away from the U.S."
In women’s competition, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto earned a win and a loss to finish the round robin at 1-3. They were fourth in their pool and did not advance to the semis.
Competition continues Friday.
