Saxton, Schalk unbeaten in round robin

GSTAAD, Switzerland (July 12, 2013) – Ben Saxton of Calgary and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., are clearly showing last week’s fifth place finish at the world championships was no fluke as they completed round robin play undefeated Friday at the fifth stop on the FIVB World Tour Grand Slam beach volleyball circuit.

Saxton and Schalk complete the round robin with a perfect 3-0 mark defeating Ruslans Sorokins and Toms Smedins of Latvia 13-21, 21-17, 15-11. The Canadians placed first in Pool G and got a bye to the round of 16 which starts Saturday.

The second and third place teams in each of the pools played an extra playoff match on Friday with the winners joining the eighth pool winners in the next round.

The first playoff opponents for Saxton and Schalk are ninth seeds Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik of Germany. The round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals are all scheduled for Saturday.
