Saxton and Redmann advance to main draw at beach volleyball World Tour
MOSCOW (June 8, 2012) – Ben Saxton of Calgary and Christian Redmann of Toronto won their two qualifying matches Friday to advance to the main draw at a stop on the FIVB World Tour circuit in beach volleyball.
Saxton and Redmann opened with a convincing 21-13, 21-17 victory over Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Ruslan Bykanov of Russia. They grabbed one of the eight available spots for the main draw edging Jon Stiekema and Christiaan Varenhorst of the Netherlands 21-19, 24-22.
It is the second World Tour event in a row, Redmann and Saxton have advanced to the main draw. They placed 13th two weeks ago in Prague.
Josh Binstock of Toronto In photo) and Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., lost in the second round and did not advance while Maverick Hatch of Comox and Sam Schachter of Toronto lost their opening match.
In the women’s main draw, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto lost their opening two matches in round robin play and must win their last round robin match to advance to the playoff round.
Bansley and Maloney fell to 16th seeds Maria Tsiartsiani and Vasiliki Arvaniti of Greece 21-18, 21-17 and top-seeds Xue Chen and Zhang Xi of China 21-19, 30-28. The top-three teams in each of the eight four-team pools advance to the playoffs. The Chinese and Greeks each won their two matches Friday.
Canadian teams are battling for spots for Continental Cup Olympic qualifier June 21-23 in Mexico. The selection process will determined following the next week’s World Tour stop in Rome.
