Sarah Pavan joins beach program

(April 25, 2013) The beach volleyball season is underway and Canadian women’s teams are off to a great start!  Three events on the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour have taken place so far and Canadians have made the top of the podium in two events.   Most recently, young newcomers Kacie Mactavish and Caleigh Whitaker claimed their first gold ever on the International circuit by defeating the USA team of Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik in the final of the Guatemala stop on the tour, April 20-21, 2013.  Mactavish was thrilled with the win, “The victory motivates us because it means that we’re on the right track.  Our partnership is beginning with high expectations.”

Canadians also earned gold at the first NORCECA tour stop March 23-24.  Canadians Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas dominated the US team of Kropp and Pavlik defeating them in consecutive sets (21-15, 21-13) to claim gold in the Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament, the opening event of the 2013 NORCECA Circuit.

In addition to the great results, the women’s beach volleyball program is pleased to announce that indoor volleyball standout Sarah Pavan will be joining the National beach volleyball program this season.  Pavan will partner with Heather Bansley and will compete in their first event at the FIVB World Tour stop in Argentina at the Corrientes Grand Slam event May 22-26, 2013.

26 year old Sarah Pavan hails from Kitchener, Ontario and is one of Canada’s most celebrated indoor women’s volleyball players. The 6’5”right side player was a four-time First Team All-American at the University of Nebraska, who led her team to an NCAA title in 2006.  Following her college career, Sarah played for a number of top professional indoor volleyball teams around the world and is currently a member of the Rio de Janeiro based team Unilever in the Brazilian League, who won the League Championship this year.  Sarah has been a member of the Canadian Women’s National Indoor Volleyball Team throughout the years, winning numerous awards, including “best scorer” at the 2012 NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament.

Sarah is no stranger to beach volleyball.  She competed in the Beach Volleyball National Championships in her youth and was the 20U Silver medalist. Pavan also played for Nebraska in the Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships prior to it being sanctioned by the NCAA.   Bansley and Pavan will be training in California before heading to Argentina.  Pavan is an exciting addition to the Women’s Beach Volleyball program, which is starting to see great results already on the road to Rio 2016.
