SANDJAM Halifax Returns to the Waterfront in 2013

(HALIFAX, May 16, 2013): SANDJAM Halifax returns to the Halifax waterfront this August 12-18! The international beach volleyball tournament will feature the top professional players from Canada, USA, Germany and England. As a special addition, for the first time in Atlantic Canada, we will host a tennis exhibition featuring former World #1 Player and current commentator Jim Courier.

“SANDJAM Halifax is a Sports & Entertainment property unlike any other in Atlantic Canada and a highlight of our short summer season,” says Derek Martin, President of Sports & Entertainment Atlantic, producers of the unique event. “Sold-out crowds in the past two years have encouraged us to continue what we started, and we believe the changes made for this year’s event will build on our momentum and improve the experience for our fans”.

Sports & Entertainment Atlantic (S|E|A) will once again transform the Salter parking lot into a 2,000-seat stadium. It will first serve as a world-class Tennis stadium for a unique exhibition event, the Legends Cup, on August 12. This exhibition features Jim Courier versus another former legendary tennis pro, to be announced.  The Legends Cup is the first high profile outdoor tennis event in the history of Atlantic Canada.  Following the exhibition, the tennis court will be removed and 350 tonnes of sand will transform our waterfront stadium once again into a world-class beach volleyball venue for the first-ever Canada Cup.

"It's inspiring to see the ideas and passion that bring different opportunities and events like SANDJAM to the water's edge," says Colin MacLean, President & CEO, Waterfront Development, a founding partner of the event. "Creating more vibrancy in our city and making the Halifax waterfront an even more attractive place to explore is what we set out to do."

The Canadian men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams will begin their quest for the inaugural Canada Cup on the evening of Thursday, August 15. Four games featuring the teams from each country will be played under the lights from 6:00-10:00p.m. Round-robin play will continue Friday evening from 6:00-10:00p.m. and on Saturday afternoon from 12:00-4:00p.m. Semi-Finals take place on Saturday evening from 6:00-10:00p.m. and the Finals on Sunday from 2:00-4:00p.m.

The events will wrap-up with the Corona Beach Party on Sunday August 18 at 8:00p.m., allowing music fans to dance the night away on the sand. Stay tuned for additional events still to be announced. For tickets and information please visit www.sandjamhalifax.ca.  Tickets will be available online beginning Friday, May 17 at 9:00 a.m.

For the past two years, SANDJAM Halifax hosted the FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH Junior World Championships. Over 25,000 fans descended upon the temporary stadium on the Halifax waterfront Salter lot to witness the best under-21 beach volleyball athletes from all over the world battle for Gold.
