Redmann and Van Huizen win main draw opener at beach volleyball World Tour stop

MARIEHAMM, Finland – Christian Redmann and Richard Van Huizen of Toronto upset the 10th seeds in their opening main draw match on Thursday at the 14th stop on the beach volleyball circuit.

Redmann and Van Huizen defeated Timo Haavisto and Toni Vahela of Finland 21-16, 21-14 in the first round. However the Canadian pair fell to Alexey Pastukhov and Konstantin Semenov of Russia in the second 21-11, 18-21, 15-10.

The tournament is a double elimination format which means Redmann and Van Huizen must go through the repechage to get back in the medal chase. Their next opponent on Friday is the 25th seeds from Germany.

Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., lost twice on Thursday and were eliminated.

On the women’s side, Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., lost their second match and will be ranked 17th overall.
