Redmann and Saxton win opening match at beach volleyball worlds
ROME – Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary won their opening match Tuesday at the beach volleyball world championships.
Redmann and Saxton, the sole Canadian entry in the men’s event, defeated Emil Boersma and Daan Spijkers of the Netherlands 21-18, 21-17. The Canadians are in pool C and play their final two round robin matches on Wednesday and Thursday.
In women’s competition, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney both of Toronto dropped to one win and one loss falling to Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova of Russia 21-18, 21-12.
Canada’s top-seeded team of Annie Martin Sherbrooke, Que., and Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., lost their first two matches on Tuesday.
Both Canadian pairs close out their round robin schedule Wednesday.
For both men’s and women’s play, the top two teams from each group plus the eight best third-place finishers move onto the knockout phase.
