Redmann and Saxton reach elimination round at World Tour stop
GSTAAD, Switzerland – Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary scored an upset victory to conclude round robin play then lost a heartbreaker in the elimination round on Friday at a World Tour stop on the beach volleyball circuit.
Redmann and Saxton were in a must win situation to advance in their last round robin match and defeated 18th seeds Casey Patterson and Bradley Keenan of the U.S., 18-21, 21-16, 15-10 Friday morning to clinch a berth in the opening playoff round.
Their first playoff match was a lengthy 53 minutes and the Canadians fell to eighth seeds Bruno Oscar Schmidt and Benjamin Insfran of Brazil 21-12, 27-29, 15-11. They will place 17th which equals their best showing on the circuit this season.
The next stop on the circuit gets underway early next week in Moscow. The Canadian entries are Redmann and Saxton as well Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen, both of Toronto for the men.
For the women, Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que.; Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney, both of Toronto and Kacie MacTavish of Sharon, Ont., and Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City.
