Reader and Sewell finish fourth at second stop on NORCECA beach tour

SAN SALVADOR – There were no big celebrations for number-one seeds Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Ray Sewell of Calgary this weekend as they placed fourth in men’s competition at the second stop on the NORCECA beach volleyball circuit.

The pair won the gold medal the previous weekend at the season opening event in the Cayman Islands.

The tournament got off to a great start for the Canadians. On Friday, they defeated James Wood and Mercury Miller of Honduras, 21-15, 21-17 and Gabriel Monge and Luis Morua of Costa Rica, 21-11, 21-9.

On Saturday, they locked up a berth in the semifinal defeating Mark Lewis and Dany Wilson of Jamaica 21-17, 16-21, 15-9.

In Sunday’s semfinal final, Reading and Sewell fell to Ty Loomis and Matt Prosser of the U.S., 21-13, 21-9 and in the bronze medal match lost to Cubans Karell Peña and Sergio Gonzalez 21-13, 17-21, 22-20.

There were 16 pairs in men’s competition.  Reader and Sewell were the only Canadian entry.

The third stop on the circuit is later this week in the Dominican Republic.
