Reader and Schalk to compete at first indoor beach volleyball tournament

OTTAWA – Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., are wildcard entries for the CEV Indoor Satellite Beach Volleyball Tournament scheduled to take place in Aalsmeer, Netherlands from Tuesday to Sunday (January 4-9)

It is the first internationally sanctioned beach volleyball tournament in the sport’s history and FIVB (the sport’s international governing body), will award ranking points for the indoor matches.

While this isn’t the prime competitive season for beach volleyball players, Reader is pleased to get an early start to the 2011 season.

“We’ll get to start competing early and be able to adjust our training for the following months through our lessons from that first event,’’ Reader told the Comox Valley Record. ‘’Rather than training blindly for four months and showing up to the first event hoping for the best, we’ll be ready to compete.’’

‘’It’s exactly what we need for our (Olympic) qualification run.’’

Reader, 26, and Schalk, 24, enjoyed a solid 2010 season. They earned the national title, competed at five events on the Pro Tour Circuit and placed seventh at the Chennai Challenge in India.

The tournament also features world champions Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann of Germany while the Dutch field star players Richard Schuil and Jon Stiekema. Shcuil was previously paired with Reinder Nummerdor and together they won three European titles.

The tournament opens today with the country quota playoffs. The qualifying teams will be promoted to the qualification round before the main draw gets underway.
