Reader and Binstock win silver at NORCECA beach volleyball stopBOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic (April 9, 2012) – Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., (in photo) and Josh Binstock of Toronto won the silver medal on Sunday at the third stop on the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) beach volleyball circuit.
The Canadian pair lost in the final to Roberto Rodriguez and Orlando Irizarry of Puerto Rico 23-21, 16-21, 15-13. Rodriguez and Irizarry have won all three stops on the circuit so far this season.
Martin and Reader lost once through the double elimination round robin before meeting the Puerto Ricans in the final. It is the second silver for Canada in men’s competition this season on the circuit. Two weeks ago in Guatemala, Sam Schachter of Toronto and Maverich Hatch of Comox were also second.
On the women’s side, Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto went 3-0 through the round robin and quarterfinals before falling in the semis. In the bronze medal match they lost to Vanessa Virgen and Martha Revuelta of Mexico 21-16, 20-22, 15-12.
Yarleen Santiago and Yamileska Yantin of Puerto Rico won the gold.
