LIMA, Peru (September 6, 2012) – The Trinity Western women’s volleyball team
from Langley, B.C.,, representing Canada, lost its U-23 Pan American Cup
quarter-final match with Argentina 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-16) at Miguel Grau
Coliseum Thursday.

Matched against a strong Argentinian side, the Spartans were bested on a
night when Lucia Fresco, the tournament’s top scorer, had another impressive
outing, leading the Argentina offense with 23 points, including 18 kills,
three aces and two blocks.

For the Spartans, first-year Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa, Ont.) registered 11

while managing a 42-30 edge in attacks.

The loss drops the Spartans into the consolation bracket where they will
battle for fifth place. With the win, Argentina advances to the tournament’s
semifinals.

“We expected to have a better game against Argentina, even though we know
they are a very strong team,” Spartans coach Ryan Hofer said. “They have a
very strong attack but that’s part of our learning process.”

Spartans captain Kelci French added: “We gave our best. Now we have to
improve in our next outings.”

Canada faces Colombia on Friday afternoon.
