Pavan sisters lead Canada to upset win over Cuba at women’s Pan Am Cup

 CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (July 16, 2012) – The sister combination of Sarah Pavan and Rebecca Pavan of Kitchener, Ont. produced 39 points on Monday as Canada upset Cuba in five sets at the Pan Am Cup women’s volleyball tournament.

The final score was 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 22-25, 15-7 in a match that lasted nearly two hours.  Sarah Pavan led Canada with 23 points while Rebecca Pavan had 16.  Also reaching double digits were Marie-Pier Murray-Méthot of Quebec City 12 and Alicia Perrin of Creston, B.C., and Shanice Marcelle of Victoria with 11 each.

“I am very proud of my team,” said Canada’s captain Brittney Page of Vernon, B.C.. “We started and finished strong. We respect Cuba but we kept the pressure on and we deserved to win.”

It was Cuba’s first loss of the tournament after opening with four straight wins including one against the U.S.  The Canadians finish the round robin at 2-3 and will battle for fifth spot in the consolation playoff round.

“Everything we did bad yesterday, we did well today,” Canada’s coach Arnd Ludwig said. “Cuba recovered after the second set but we had the right answers.”

Tuesday is a rest day and the playoffs start Wednesday.
