Third seeded Ottawa will face the seventh seeded Alberta Pandas in the 8 p.m. semifinal on Friday night.  Also advancing to the Final Four were Trinity Western University and five-time defending champions UBC Thunderbirds.

“Our team spirit is incredible,” said rookie middle Sophie Chenail, who earned player of the game honours for Ottawa playing in front of her hometown Sherbrooke crowd. “They were there all year always cheering with me and smiling with me, telling me to keep working. I’ll remember this for a long time.”

In the other quarterfinal matches Thursday, the Trinity Western University Spartans defeated Dalhousie University 25-13, 25-18, 25-19, the UBC Thunderbirds beat l’Université Laval Rouge et Or 25-21, 25-12, 25-19 and University of Alberta Pandas upset second-seed l’Université de Montréal 25-15, 25-12, 16-25, 25-7.

The Thunderbirds are vying for a sixth straight Canadian title which would tie a record.

“In the first round, lots of things can happen, especially against an experienced team,” said UBC’s head coach Doug Reimer.  “So I'm how happy with how we hung in there and weathered the storm, to a degree, and played with composure to win that first set.”

The semifinals are on Friday while the men`s tournament gets underway at l’Université Laval in Quebec City with the quarterfinals.
