O’Gorman/Nusbaum win first match

UMAG, Croatia (June 20, 2013)  – Tenth-seeds Grant O’Gorman of Toronto and Aaron Nusbaum of Aurora, Ont., (in photo)won their first match in main draw action Thursday at the FIVB U21 World Beach Volleyball Championships.

O’Gorman and Nusbaum, the bronze medallists here in 2011 at the world youth championships, defeated Briand Mugabowingabo and Dukondaine Yvan Bruce of Burundi 21-13, 27-25 in Pool G play. Both teams play their two final round robin matches on Friday.

In Group B, Greg Simone of London, Ont., and Gabriel Burlacu of Tecumseh, Ont., lost their opening match to second seeds Maciej Kosiak and Maciej Rudol of Poland 21-7, 21-14.

In women’s competition, ninth-seeds Sophie Bukovec and Ali Wooley of Toronto  are 1-1 after Thursday’s opening main draw play. They defeated Alexa Strange and Jace Pardon of the U.S., 21-18, 21-19 then lost to Anna Gorbunova and Ekaterina Makroguzova of Russia 21-14, 21-14,

The Russians lead the Group H standing at 2-0 followed by Bukovec and Wooley and the Americans.

In Group B, Tamara Vujadinovic and Emily Kuwaguchi, both of Toronto, lost their two matches on Thursday.
