Numbers Up Again for Canadian Open Championships
Volleyball Canada is pleased to confirm record-setting participation numbers for the 2014 Canadian Open Championships.
This year, 824 teams are registered, compared with the previous high 772 set in 2013.
“I’m very proud of the hard work by the host organizing committees to create more capacity in their respective Canadian Open Championships in order to allow more teams to participate this year,” said Chrissy Benz, Volleyball Canada’s Domestic Competitions Director.
With an increase of 52 additional teams participating, more than 750 athletes and coaches will benefit from the experience of participating in these national and interprovincial competitions.
“Volleyball at all levels is gaining in popularity and we are excited to help keep up with the demand for high-quality competitive experiences,” said Benz.
Overall, 2013 and 2014 have shown the largest growth in participation since going to the open concept for the nationals. Girls’ teams still outnumber the boys, but large gains have been made on the male side in the 18U category, which is up by eight teams over last year.
This is truly a national event, with venues in Abbotsford, BC, Regina, Sask., Calgary and Edmonton, Alta., and Sherbrooke, Que. More information on each tournament can be found on Volleyball Canada’s web site http://www.volleyball.ca/node/3176
Not only does the competition promise to be exciting for the participants, the events are expected to draw more than 15,000 spectators! Event passes are available online at a discounted rate for the 14U Canadian West Open (Abbotsford), 15U Canadian West Open (Regina), and 16U Canadian West Open (Calgary), and 17U/18U Canadian Open (Edmonton) until April 11, 2014.
Next year, all teams will travel to one location, Calgary, for the largest volleyball event in ever held in that city. For more information about Calgary 2015, please visit: http://www.volleyball.ca/content/calgary-2015.
