Event: 2011 NORCECA Continental Championship
Dates: Men’s: Sept 3-11, 2011 Women’s: Sept 24-Oct 2, 2011
The NORCECA Continental Championships are held every second year for both the men’s and women’s national volleyball teams within the NORCECA countries (North America, Central America, and the Caribbean). In addition to valuable world ranking points, the winner of these events gets a berth into FIVB World Grand Champions Cup (year following the Olympics) or FIVB World Cup (year preceding the Olympics.
2009 marked the 21st time that these championships took place for women and men. In 2009, the Canadian women’s team finished in 5th place, finishing ahead of Mexico, Costa Rico and Trinidad & Tobago. The national women’s team has played in every championship except for in 1971 and in 2001. Team Canada’s best result on the women’s side has been second place, which they achieved in 1973 and 1989.
In 2009, the men’s national team played in the bronze medal game after an impressive win against the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals in which they won in 5 sets. They played Puerto Rico in the 3/4 finals and ended up in 4th place. The Canadian men’s team has played in every single NORCECA championship since it began in 1969. Team Canada’s best results on the men’s side were in 1979, 1983, 1989 and 2003 where they came in second place.
NORCECA also hosts Championships in the Junior and Youth Categories every second year (even years) which qualifies teams for the FIVB Junior and Youth World Championships.
