National Women's Volleyball Team Athletes act as Honourary 'Big Sisters' on the Weekend

WINNIPEG - Several athletes from the Winnipeg based National Women's Volleyball Team were out this weekend delivering a clinic for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg. The clinic was held at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate on Saturday, April 10, and involved close to 20 participants from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg organization.

National Team members Tonya Mokelki (Weyburn, SK), Julie Young (Red Deer, AB), Janie Guimond (Montreal, QC), Tasha Holness (Calgary, AB) and Colette Meek (Edmonton, AB) ran the three hour clinic and put the participants through a series of skills and drill activities. Each participant also received a t-shirt and a volleyball, and enjoyed some pizza with the National Team athletes afterwards, giving them all a chance to mix and mingle.

This clinic was the first of an ongoing series that the National Women's Volleyball Team is planning in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg. Funding support for this initiative was received by the WISE (Women and Sport Encouragement) Fund, through the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), given out primarily to assist active women and/or organizations that are currently offering or creating sport programs targeted to girls and women.

Plans are currently underway for the next event to be held in the fall prior to the National Women's Team's departure for the World Championship in Japan.
