May and Schachter named Canada’s male junior athletes of the year

OTTAWA - Garrett May and Sam Schachter, both of Toronto, were named the male junior athletes of the year at the 2010 Canadian Sport Awards this past weekend during the Sport Leadership conference held in the nation’s capital.

May and Schachter won the gold medal at the world junior beach volleyball championships this past September in Anyala, Turkey. It was the first-ever gold medal for Canada in the 10-year history of the event.

The Canadians, seeded 18th,  went 7-0 in the tournament and defeated the second-seed team from Brazil in the final winning the deciding third-set 15-13. They also knocked-off the sixth, seventh and 10th-seeds. There were 78 teams in the week-long tournament.

May, whose father was a professional player, attends and plays for the University of Western Ontario in London while Schachter has chosen to be part of the National Beach Volleyball Practice Centre in Toronto to pursue his beach career.
